“A revolution is impossible without a revolutionary situation.”

– Vladimir Lenin

THE STORY

The Schmidt Sisters: A Revolutionary Situation is based on a true story. In turn of the 20th century Russia, two sisters are bestowed with a lofty inheritance from their Bolshevik brother. Lenin wants that money for the Bolshevik party, so he sends two comrades to woo the women and marry them to secure the funds. One couple is diametrically opposed while the other falls so in love they are blinded to their surroundings.

OUR STORY

Rebecca and Margo met in October 2020, during lockdown, while working as volunteer coordinators on a campaign to save New Orleans libraries from budget cuts. After winning the campaign, they discussed pandemic goals and Rebecca mentioned she had been reading a biography about Vladimir Lenin and found a short passage about two sisters that would make a great musical. Margo told her she write lyrics. Now they needed a composer.

Rebecca and Margo found Ashlynn through mutual friends. Ashlynn was living in California and shortly thereafter moved to Oregon. Margo moved to New York City. Rebecca stayed in New Orleans. This all-femme team wrote The Schmidt Sisters together mostly over Zoom, from three corners of the country.
